So what exactly is APR (Abortion Pill Reversal)?
When a woman takes the abortion reversal pill, it involves large doses of progesterone to reverse the effects of an abortion pill.
When can it be taken?
The abortion pill reversal is most effective when used within 24 hours of taking the abortion pill (RU-486, Mifepristone). The estimated amount of continued pregnancies, after taking the abortion pill reversal, is 55%. There have also been many successes when the progesterone is started up to 72 hours after taking the first pill of the Ru-486. The abortion pill reversal is not effective if the second medication, (Misoprostal), in the abortion process is taken.
How does it work?
To answer that we first need to look at how the RU-486 (Mifepristone, the abortion pill) works. It consists of two different medications that are taken about 72 hours apart. The first, Mifepristone blocks the receptors where the progesterone would be absorbed by the womb. The body starts producing progesterone when conception begins. The blocking of the progesterone causes the lining of the uterus that’s been built up for the pregnancy to begin breaking down. It also causes the cervix to loosen which can cause serious problems for the pregnancy. The second pill is called Misoprostol or Cytotec which causes contractions and the fetus and the lining of the uterus to be expelled and the abortion is then complete. So the high doses of progesterone work to outcompete for the binding or absorption space. This gives the body the progesterone that is needed to help the pregnancy develop normally.
Is it safe?
Progesterone has been used for decades in pregnant women without issue. There is no evidence of birth defects from the babies born after receiving the Progesterone. The American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a 2500 member organization, supports offering abortion pill reversal to women who regret initiating the abortion pill process, after appropriate informed consent.
How successful is it?
The success rate of the abortion reversal pill is about 68%. Over 400 healthy babies have been born since 2007 after using the progesterone following taking the Mifepristone.
